The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the Brentwood doctor accused of slamming on his car brakes to deliberately injure two bicyclists was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon, among other charges. “The three-week trial of Dr. Christopher Thompson drew close attention from cyclists, many of whom viewed the case as a test of the justice system’s commitment to protecting cyclists.” Backstory: LAist.com has the graphic and bloody photos of one of the victims. The smoking gun in the case seemed to be that two other bicyclists alleged the doctor had slammed on his brakes in front of them just a few months before this incident. [LA Times]

Bicycling.com weighs in on this week’s conviction of Brentwood doctor Christopher Thompson for assault with a deadly weapon. “Although cyclists were generally relieved that Thompson had been convicted, I believe that this case is not really a victory for anyone.” Cycling lawyer Bob Mionske doesn’t think this case will serve as a precedent in other vehicular vs. bike cases because Mionske feels most other plaintiffs won’t have a paper trail (the smoking gun was that other cyclists came forward with stories of being forced off the road by the doctor). Oh, and he’s certain Thompson will appeal. [Bicycling.com]

Biking Blog on Thompson Conviction: Bicycling.com weighs in on this… - Save the Golfers: As the Los Angeles Times…
As the Los Angeles Times covered earlier this week, there’s a big hubbub over golf carts at the city’s parks because the city can’t get it together to award a contract to a golf cart company, meaning golfers have to use old, dangerous carts. In some instance, the carts have “brakes that fail and steering wheels that veer in a particular direction,” according to the Times. With the vote tomorrow, the press releases are flying! Just like the golfers. Via the InBox: “Craig Kessler, executive director of the Public Links Golf Association for Southern California, is urging the city to pick the recommended candidate, noting that “the public has suffered for 6 ½ years and has had to endure dilapidated golf carts.” We have yet to receive a press release from the opposition–in this case, Service Employees International Union Local 721. A housing dichotomy has developed between those who think the residential real estate market has bottomed and those who think we are still falling. For the. … This argument is flawed in that the vast majority of Los Angeles cities have median prices out of line with median incomes. While some cities like Beverly Hills can support this, not every city can support these “unsustainable” median price/income ratios. You might be able to make that argument about South …

Uhh, where did this one come from? Via the Pasadena Star-News: “The [County Board of Supervisors] is expected to vote today on an ordinance banning smoking in county parks, beaches and other public places. The proposal also includes county facilities managed by contractors, such as public golf courses.” Sorry, golfers. Tough month. The ban, proposed by Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, would take effect in 30 days. “It will also turn offenses into misdemeanors that may include fines or short jail time, officials said.” NYC also has been talking about banning smoking in parks, or creating smoking area. More Bad News for Golfers: Uhh, where did this one… - Westlake Adjacent?: Yesterday, the Los Angeles Times ran…
Yesterday, the Los Angeles Times ran a front page story that wondered, what, if any, effect the kidnapping and murder of 17-year-old Lily Burk might have on the area near Southwestern Law School (pictured) in Koreatown. While crime is pretty low in the area, the paper points out the 1988 murder of a 27-year-old graphic designer in Westwood threw the Westside neighborhood into a downward spiral it’s still trying to climb out of. But trying to draw a parallel between the neighborhoods may not be fair–Westwood had a growing gang problem before the shooting. But will Westsiders who fear going east of La Brea be put off by the crime? Also, the Times doesn’t call this area Koreatown, but refers to it as Mid-Wilshire. Puzzling. [LA Times]
